McNeil Industries, a privately-held manufacturer based in Painesville, marked its seventh consecutive year of sales growth exceeding 20%, making it one of the Northern Ohio's fastest-growing manufacturing businesses. In 2007, the company's growth was recognized nationally with a "Top Five" ranking for its 2Q sales growth (year-over-year) from the Private Company Index (PCI). In November, was also the first company of its size to win a "Competitiveness Challenge" award from MAGNET, an Ohio-based manufacturing advocacy organization, for operational excellence. McNeil Industries currently employs 55 people at two locations in the Cleveland area. Its headquarters and main manufacturing operations are housed in a modern 32,000 sq ft facility in Painesville while its Deburring Systems are produced at a 25,000 sq ft facility on Cleveland's west side.
The company was founded in 1986, when Randall J. McNeil, the company's current president and CEO, launched an industrial seal products business called Seal Supply, Inc. In the company's early days, Mr. McNeil operated from the basement of a condominium going on sales calls while wife Sandy left her part time job to handle the phones and make sure customer orders went out on time. After the first year he moved into an industrial space in Willoughby, Ohio. To meet customer requests for seal-related components, Mr. McNeil added manufacturing capabilities in 1991, working with a neighboring machine shop before hiring a machinist and buying the company’s first CNC lathe. By 1998, the company's manufacturing operations outpaced the seals business as its manufactured components business grew. Today, the company's growing specialty machining business continues to serve strategic customers throughout Northern Ohio with high-precision plastic and metal components. In 2001, as the company sought additional machining capacity, Seal Supply acquired the assets of ERMCO, Inc. and reorganized to become McNeil Industries. Along with needed equipment and additional skilled employees, McNeil also acquired its first manufactured product line: the MAXAM® Bearing. Today, this bearing is distributed in the US and Canada by Applied Industrial Technologies and Motion Industries, with manufacturing, technical, and field support provided by the company. Encouraged by the success of its first manufactured product line, the company decided to find and acquire another proprietary product line. By early 2005, McNeil Industries completed its acquisition of Precision Guide Systems, Inc. Today, the McNeil Guide Systems product line continues to grow with guide pins, bushings, ball-bearing retainers, and spare parts that serve the needs of precision tool and die makers and high-speed, precision stamping operations worldwide. Shortly thereafter, when growth outstripped the company's 16,000 sq ft Willoughby, Ohio facility, McNeil Industries moved to its Painesville facility in July. In April 2007, as the company again sought growth through a new product line, McNeil Industries acquired OLS, Inc., a Cleveland-based maker of automated deburring systems. McNeil Deburring Systems are manufactured in a facility on Cleveland’s west side, where the infusion of McNeil culture has already paid dividends in the growth of this product line through manufacturing, assembly, and supply chain improvements. |
